How do you like your rifles to look?

Must be shiny new like they just came out of the showroom

I am OK with some scuffs and marks as long as they are not excessive

again, i'm another of 'it depends'

I try to look after them, but if they scratch or dent, i'm not going to cry. BUT I try to keep them looking nice.

but then, i dont have anything truly old

I try to keep mine looking good - not pristine, as that would be impossible - but clean, well maintained, and well cared-for. I try to repair any dings in the wood, major scratches to the bluing, and what have you. Last time I traded in one of my rifles, the dealer didn't even open the bag - he just said "I know it will be in good shape, you really look after your firearms."

Same for me. I can't stand any bit of machinery which is clagged up with muck, and so can't work as it should. Clean, and lightly oiled is my mark. Though I do get a bit carried away with rubbing wood oil into stocks!

Mind, I suppose it depends on what the OP means by pretty; unlike Karen, the only way I'd take a turquoise gun would be if it was free (or at least, dirt cheap) - and, even then, I'd sneak it home in a gun-slip, remove the stock and bury it in the garden! ;)

As for guns like this:

I can't really tick any boxes, I collect and shoot late 19th to mid 20th century military rifles and have no interest in commercial or modern military weapons.

Overall cosmetic condition is of secondary interest, as long as the rifle is safe to shoot and has a story to tell, it will find a place in my collection.

I just wish they could talk!

Its a difficult one Dave.

New custom built rifle....look after it like a new car.

Old service rifle.....they get dinged and worn, maintain the character but don't get it sprayed etc.

Bluing....worn I guess is OK but ideally not scratched.

Modern AR....clean but its going to get bashed about a bit and pick up mud (and the modern flat finishes pick up crap like you would not believe)

I guess we all know what we want in a rifle.

Personally, I don't get to bent out of shape as long as it shoots nicely.

My 1939 Mosin looks pretty shabby but every scratch and dent tells a story and that's how it will stay.My AKs both have the "selector scratch" and the odd knock here and there but to be honest the more wear they get the better they look.
