Machining aluminium
Did not know were to post this really. I'm on a learning curve all the stuff I'm working on is gun related. But but well I don't really know what to say. So Ill just get on with it. Iv discovered that aluminium is really easy stuff to machine it comes up really well and is really use full for making bits and pieces for reloading and shooting stuff. Any way one of our machinists who we had leant out to a outside company. (Actually we were charging them a arm and a leg for him) but that's another story came back to work. We have nothing for him to do at the moment so I jumped in and said hey show me how to grind HSS tools I want to know how to profile. How to cut grooves for O rings etc etc. What a great day I have had to morrow he is going to show me how to set the cutters up on the lathe and make stuff. I'm so excited I cant sleep. I'm going to be cheeky and see if I can get him to give me a day on the mill. Did I tell you I was buying a mill. Probably not that's another story. Oh and I nearly forgot knurling I had a go at that turned out really well. I managed to snatch a knurling tool as well.

Re: Machining aluminium
I pretty much only make stuff out of aluminum, it's usually what's to hand. Not that I'm any good, I do blame the lathe a bit to though :-)
I would be excited too!
What mill are you looking at?

Re: Machining aluminium
I'd love a CNC mill, <green eyes> hope you have fun!
Re: Machining aluminium
That sounds an excellent opportunity. :) I'm sure there's a name for this syndrome. You lust after a small lathe, that scratches the itch for a few months, then you really can't do without a bigger/better one.
Oh, if only I had a mill, just a little hobby one, If only it had DRO/CNC. And then of course you will soon need to start anodizing all that shiny aluminium.
Here's my cheap Chinese hobby mill - The best thing I ever did was fit the DRO system.
