SO......
The next question is....
Given a .308 26" barrel 1 in 12, what weight/style of bullet would work best. There were some interesting comments earlier in this thread but I'm not sure what it would all boil down to.

Re: Barrel length
I may have answered my own question here,
It looks like the .308 with a 1-12" twist would be good for - 12" for bullets up to 170 gr.
and
The 260 Rem wit its 1-8" twist would be good for bullets heavier than 130 gr.

Re: Barrel length
If you are planning on shooting target only and out to 1000yds I would suggest if you are on a budget a better plan would be to find a cheap donor rifle and fit a 30" + barrel for best results

Re: Barrel length
Hmm, that makes an interesting read, oomans. One thing that puzzles us is that DTA claim their 16 inch barrelled SRS Covert model is useful, i.e. accurate, out to 1,000 mards. We struggle to believe that. We fancy a DTA and are saving our pennies for one. We shoot at 300 and 600 mards most of the time so 1,000 mard performance isn't essential, but it would be nice to know if it could pawdle such a distance.

Evening peeps,
AS usual, there is more than one person in the room with the same question !
I got a bit bored a couple of months ago and felt that 1 needed something newish to play with .
Sent my Howa 308 ( Ali axiom stock in 308) to my friendly purveyor of precision swarffe who has turned it into a bit of a monster. We now have 28"Shillen barrel, about .9" at the muzzle (* balances just right for me ) and I've now got to start again with developing bangs that it likes.
I'm only going to be plinking out to a max of 600 mards as I don't have the B*lls to go for the big'un ( yet :-)
Just waiting for new IOR scope and then its chrono /groupie time
I was wondering if 28" was too long but the comments thus far have reassured me. As always a mine of info on here, thanks peeps. ( all the info I could find on 'tinernet was what happens if you shorten barrels.
I'll post a photo of the bangstick when I've got the scope and we'll see just how well behaved the little copper jacketed critters are ( if I can get a group at any sort of distance then anybody can ) might even admit to any scores as well.
