AR 15 Colt upper receiver group for Christmas

I've seen some AR and AK series rifles on arfcom etc that have a strange looking adapter thing on the pistol grip, is that one of the restrictions?

Not sure what you mean but given it's California anything is possible

Edit....just read that if a grip like the one in the pic above is fitted the magazine can be removed as normal but if a standard pistol grip is fitted a "bullet button" or mag lock must be fitted and the mag can't be removed without a "tool" that isn't attached to the rifle.....if that makes sense.

Yeah that's probably one of the ways folks have come up with getting around it. Basically all the $h1t California comes up with regarding what they classify as assault weapons are nothing more than taxation money making scams. As we all know the criminals will always obey the rules and pay the fees and taxes imposed

Very nice looking rifle there and I know what you mean about being so easy to shoot, I have to say that the AR's I own are probably my most favourite rifles. Where did you buy the upper from?

Got it from an individual on the Gunboards forum. He was liquidating some of his stock on hand and I got a good deal.

I considered getting another lower group for the new upper but these days buying a long arm in California is as much of a hassle as buying a handgun so I passed on it and just went with the upper. I like the way I can get multiple configurations for the same lower. Next up may be a 6.8mm upper.

As long as the arm with a protruding pistol grip and flash hider has a fixed magazine defined as requiring a tool to remove it from the arm, then it can be owned by anyone not restricted from owning firearms. In this case the magazine release button is covered with a device that requires the tip of a bullet or something of a similar size to be inserted to depress the magazine release. It is pure nonsense and reflects the complete ignorance of the non firearms aware legislature body. A semi automatic rifle without a protruding pistol grip can use any size detachable magazine without the silliness of the bullet button as long as it does not have a flash suppressor fitted to the barrel. So, an M1A type rifle or Mini 14 is allowed as long as the flash suppressor is swapped for a muzzle brake. Why? sheer ignorance on the part of some staffers working for the state senate when the rules were written. You probably have rules equally nonsensical that reflect the ignorant fear of firearms by non shooting government officials.

The state re-wrote the rules on pistol grips to define it as a grip the is below the top of the trigger. Unfortunately for them and fortunately for me, my semi automatic 1919 has the grip above the top of the trigger so their silly rule completely skips what would be a very fearsome looking arm for the uninformed!

My plan had been to just swap the upper on my existing lower as desired but someone local offered me a stripped lower receiver at a great price so I bought it along with the internals and a butt stock assembly from Stag Arms. They are a great company and give a nice discount to current and retired military

I put the lower receiver together yesterday with the help of my son several times. I got some eye-rolling from him when I had to ask him to hold something while I tapped it in place but when it was all finished he said it came out pretty well. I'm happy that the anodizing on the upper and lower match in shade and color.

Now I have a 20" HB GI pattern A2 and the Colt/Anderson/Stag A2 carbine. When I mounted the Burris 1.bowl-4.bowl scope I sighted it using Winchester 55gr ball, my handloads with 62gr ball and then finished up with some PP 69gr HP match rounds. The PP match performed superbly at 100 yards on paper and to 250 yards on the steel plates.
