Monmouth Rifle Club: Any member reviews?

Hi All,
I'm looking to join Monmouth Rifle Club and was wondering if anybody has any reviews of the club.....
Want to make sure my style of shooting will fit in; generally rimfire, aim in rough direction and dump the mag as fast as poss.
Usual targets are 4 pint milk jugs or pumpkins when available clapclap
Don't need contact info etc. as I'm already in email contact with the secretary.

I would suggest that if all you want to shoot is milk jugs and pumpkins then Monmouth may not be the club for you.

Monmouth is a diverse club where most disciplines are shot but in all cases deliberate aimed shots even when shot at speed is the order of the day so as not to damage the structure of the range or cause unnecessary wear and tear or damage to the targetry. Dave if you just want to blat rounds downrange as fast as you can I would suggest that you would be better served by a field firing range.

Being a tunnel range the club works hard to limit the water entering the range and doesn't need additional water dumped everywhere or the plastic debris that goes with the milk jugs. The club also discourages the use of foodstuffs on the range such as fillers in muzzle loading pistols that leaves a trail of food that could encourage rodents. I am therefore fairly sure that they would also take a dim view on debris left by your pumpkin shooting.

Aim in rough direction and dump the mag as fast as possible.......more ammunition for the anti-gun crowd in that statement, sometimes shooters can be our own worst enemy!.

Quite possibly so but if you want to find out if you will fit in with a club that you are thinking of applying to join then the correct way is to go along and introduce yourself.
Don't forget also that it is you that is applying to join the club. They don't have to accept applications, membership is a privilege and not a right.

Thanks for the replies....think I'll just stick to Severnside; 200m open range where pretty much everything goes as long as it's safe.

Not to start an argument, but why should what I posted earlier give any ammo to the antis?

And no...it wasn't tongue in cheek - my Walther Uzi has 3 mags, as does my 10/22. I quite often load the lot up and see how quick I can empty them again....and last weeks shoot looked like a Halloween special as EVERYONE (almost) turned up with pumpkins to destroy....

Last month we even had a "Compare the Meerkat" doll tied to a post for some bashing, club secretary finished it off with a .44mag underlever before I could have a go . I've even managed to bump fire my Ruger but the Uzi doesn't want to play!

Remember.... I would never condemn someone for their style of shooting, so please don't condemn mine

FYI: my club has at least 2 new members directly from my showing them how shooting can be FUN......that's what it's all about

The other month we set Mrs Rabbit from Beatrix Potter up at the end of the range and I stuck a 54r out of the Dragunov into her and she didn't flinch!, closely followed by another nine.On closer inspection every round passed straight through with a trail of stuffing but she didn't move an inch.

On another note why not join Offas Dyke Rifle Club?, there are regular shoots on the MOD ranges at Sennybridge which I would assume isn't far from you."G" range would be ideal for you, loads of drop-down targets out to 350m and a variety of firing points.Theres a good friendly bunch of guys and you get to see some interesting bits of kit there as well and as we shoot with the FCSA guys you'll see some awesome .50 cal shooting, those guys take long range to another level!.

Hm - Wonder what the range Safety Certificate says? ours does mention 'deliberate shooting' - yours? 200m ? is it a free field range so there are no danger area issues then? ricochets are fine eh?

Jeeezz if I wrote that think A. my FLO would be up for a visit to discuss my reasons for holding firearms vs range safety cert. & B the club Sec would 'want a word'.

Who signed your range safety cert card? or is this an example as to why we need them in the first place?

Target shooting is a valid reason to hold a firearm & fun targets are possible too; firebird, polos, eccentrics etc but none of what you describe like that above I regard as 'target shooting', it just comes across as reckless blatting? & if that's your only reason to posses? don't be surprised if those 'antis' in GB deliberately grab the end of that stick & use it to beat the whole sport up with - thanks.

If you came to many of the clubs I am a member of your application would be refused. Am sure Monmouth have read what you have said & yours is already red stamped.

We do have fun too but it comes in different guises; the smallest group, the best score with a #uck-up, the best series, the best average over a period, the best single score, converting all your sighters, not converting bulls! teaching a kid till they beat you, seeing somebody excel & win, seeing the girlfriend thrash the boyfriend at a guest day (not literally now....but?), socialising with mates, banter from dropping your last shot of a 2&15 series, making your own ammo that is twice as accurate as the original factory stuff & wondering 'how do they cock it up so much'? the best time on steels, snaps, groups, skirmishers etc etc.

Recreational & competitive shooting is fun, but what you describe is 'reckless discharge', & I feel your descriptions of what you et all do, on a public forum, bring the sport of 'target shooting' the number 1 reason to hold an FAC into disrepute.
