Which lamp?

Deer Stalking… reliable word of mouth recommendation from someone you know has undertaken such stalking being offered by a specific syndicate is best. Like other walks of life, stalking has its scammers. E.G., make sure there is deer, of the species sought, on the land being made available; that appropriate insurance is in place; that there is recourse for recompense if it all goes wrong. In addition, obtain and understand terms and conditions; consider the implications of allowing a syndicate leader to be a FAC mentor; make sure ‘coaches’ are suitably qualified; consider the quality of deer management, the construction & execution of a shooting plan and safety; determine if the land is over-shot.
If in doubt, contact BASC or similar.

Re: Which lamp?
Just to update on this subject, after talking it over with other night shooters,i've decided on a Deben Max Pro lamp with the dimmer and cables, etc (not the full kit),as i've already got 12v 7ah battery and the correct low amp charger i've saved some money.Hopefully it will be here in time for the week-end, I'll post the results,if any one is interested.

Yes I woul dbe interested in seeing a picture or two of your setup please.
Re: Which lamp?
I will post a few pictures when i've got it sorted.
I was out this evening with my friend Steve doing some lamping (static) and he was using a Lightforce with dimmer, what a difference it makes to be able to dim the lamp at first just to scout around, and then if something is seen to turn it up for the shot,we had four rabbits this evening,(two apiece) three with the use of his lamp and one to me with my GL4.
So, tired,but very happy.

Hi Alan
Do a fair bit of lamping with centrefire, best hand held lamps for spotting are without doubt the lightforce range, but they work best from a vehicle as they soon drain batteries, as for rifle mounted i now only use LED lamps, Deben and Cluson both do good lamps, internal rechargeable batteries keep thinks light and compact, i have no problem shooting to 150 yards.

They don't have the range or width of beam of the big 12v lamps but they work just fine when looking through the scope.

Re: Which lamp?
cluson IMO ,is the best. Too big a lamp & your giving the game away , many yards ahead & makes em lamp shy, too weak a lamp & you struggle to get clarity shot. light force are very poor quality all round! cluson are well made & have superb back up , for spares & extras, The sl2 has a lower beam which is ideal for fence hoping etc , & is also pocket manageable. forget the rest buy the best !
As for the lone shooter, with a scope bracket, these are better still, light , powerful 100+ Yds & an amaisng 10 hours + on a lithium rechargeable battery.

Re: Which lamp?
A follow up to my query about lamps, I decided to buy a Deben Max lamp with the dimmer switch, and have found it do what it says on the box, light out to 400yards,but. strange thing is when used on my car accessories socket (a 60reg Fiesta) the light is a yellowish/amber light, but, when used on a 12v 7ah battery it gives a white light, strange! It certainly works well with the dimmer switch, allowing me to sweep round on a low setting then IF anything is seen turn up the brightness whilst aiming.i've also bought the red filter for it,but, not had chance to use ,yet.
The Ledray GL4 is still on my .22lr as it's only used for up to 60 yard shots,it gives a good light out to 100yards,but, i've picked up eyes at 200+yards,not enough to see what they are though. This is the Deben Max on my Cz 527 Hornet. This is the Ledray GL4 on my Ruger 77/22

Re: Which lamp?
Is that with the engine running? I do wonder if they drop the voltage on the accesory socket for some reason. Is the external battery Lead Acid or NiCAd?alan108 wrote:A follow up to my query about lamps, I decided to buy a Deben Max lamp with the dimmer switch, and have found it do what it says on the box, light out to 400yards,but. strange thing is when used on my car accessories socket (a 60reg Fiesta) the light is a yellowish/amber light, but, when used on a 12v 7ah battery it gives a white light, strange!
Nice looking set up you have on both rifles.

Re: Which lamp?
Top one looks good but also heavy.
Do you carry these or are you stationary?

Re: Which lamp?
It's with the engine running and not running, seems to make no difference at all. It's a lead acid battery,i've been looking(only looking) at the Lithium Ion batterys, but, cost is putting me off at the moment
I also wonder if the voltage is reduced on the acc. socket for some reason. ??
Alan :)
