So what about things like 357 or 44 magnum are they allowed on your range?

What about published reloading data for a fullbore rifle from the manufacturer that is subsonic? For example, Hogdgon lists subsonic loads for the 223 and 308 as well as Trailboss loads for a variety of cartridges - so, if it's a official handload is it really downloaded ammunition?Racalman wrote:Downloaded rounds have considerably reduced powder weights to reduce the muzzle velocity, as opposed to normal loads that would be used on an outdoor range.dromia wrote:Out of curiosity how do you define the difference between downloaded and handloaded?
The issue only arises with people who want us to change our range orders to allow the use of fullbore rifles indoors.

JUST the powder weight is different?Racalman wrote:Downloaded rounds have considerably reduced powder weights to reduce the muzzle velocity, as opposed to normal loads that would be used on an outdoor range.dromia wrote:Out of curiosity how do you define the difference between downloaded and handloaded?

I know of a lot of factory & military ammo, going back over 100 years, that allows indoor use of standard rifles.
Not sure what the problem is...

Ignorance or bloody mindness is causing your members to miss out on a fascinating an enjoyable aspect of the sport by using published and tested data for gallery loads in CF rifles.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

How do you define a "rifle" versus a "pistol" cartridge?

Surely just what platform the round was originally intended to be fired from? The only dual platform calibre i can think of is 5.7x28mm which is unlikely to find its way onto a civilian range any time soon.zanes wrote:How do you define a "rifle" versus a "pistol" cartridge?
Other than that i don't know of any calibre that could produce ambiguity? But then i stick to common contemporary calibres... (EDITED

Dromia, I have only just picked up this thread again and was horrified to read of the Durham licensing and NSRA actions. It would not be difficult to read between the lines and jump to the immediate conclusion that the Durham licensing are doing their utmost to reduce FAC numbers in their area whilst the NSRA and washing their hands of the more obscure small bore disciplines. It does make me wonder how long it will be before they say you are not insured unless either shooting a competition or training for a competition.
Is Durham unique in their approach to licensing or are other regions adopting a similar approach?
Dodgyrog, are you still an area rep for the NSRA and if so can you shed more light on this please?

Exactly the one I was thinking of- bottlenecked and originally designed for the 1873 rifle....dromia wrote:e.g 44-40 and many other common calibres.

Yes (it wouldn't be much of a range if they weren't).dromia wrote:So what about things like 357 or 44 magnum are they allowed on your range?
This is starting to sound like the Spanish Inquisition
It only affects a few members who wanted to shoot fullbore rifles indoors. As we shoot on MoD ranges every month it's not much of an issue.
