Life in prison for illegal possession of firearm
New legislation, which came into effect on July 14, increases the maximum jail term for illegal gun possession from 10 years to life – and that includes anyone who’s storing a weapon for someone else.

... and actually murdering someone typically carries only 15-25 years?
Who are these CLOWNS who vote these IDIOTS into power?

It's a life sentence; didn't see anything to say it is not the same as for murder? Agree priorities are a lot screwy mind!
Re: Life in prison for illegal possession of firearm
I simply don't get how possession can logically carry the same sentence as actually murdering someone.
Re: Life in prison for illegal possession of firearm
That's twisted genius at work, there. "Hello plod - I'm calling to make a confession to a strict liability offence carrying a life sentence. By the way I'm sat at home right now, so drop by whenever you feel like it."Weapons and ammunition can be surrendered at any police station but anyone handing in a firearm during the surrender is advised to check the opening times of their station.
To receive advice on how best to transport the weapon responsibly from home to the police station phone 101 before travelling. Anyone unable to reach a police station is also advised to call 101 and arrangements can be made to collect the weapon.

Re: Life in prison for illegal possession of firearm
The whole sentencing system is ridiculous in the UK.
There is already a 'mandatory' 5 year sentence for possession of a firearm, but how often does it get applied? NEVER seems to be the answer to that one.
Most sentences seem to be 'up to' xyz years imprisonment, but the maximums never appear to be applied. I don't know why we even bother to take people to court sometimes. Just fine every prisoner a fiver and turn them loose.

Have you seen how much it costs to house prisoners nowadays?!
Re: Life in prison for illegal possession of firearm
If it gets illegal guns off the streets then there's a chance there may be less murders .
The question of sentencing for murder is a separate issue here , perhaps one day it will be addressed and the penalty for committing murder will be increased , one step at a time .
Just pie in the sky perhaps but if there are less illegal guns around there will an opportunity to prove that legal gun ownership isn't a bad thing in the eyes of some people .

Re: Life in prison for illegal possession of firearm
A life sentence is exactly that a life sentence, it (the licence) never expires. The years associated with a life sentence or tariff are the minimum they must serve before being eligible for parole, except for a Whole Life Order. So someone could be given a life sentence with a 1 year tariff, but if they breech the licence conditions (not necessarily commit a crime) then they will be returned to prison.

Also, the 5 year mandatory sentence for firearm possession is only for Section 5 firearms.

Well, quite.
Any sensible law has a sentence proportionate to the severity of the crime. This law is a poor one; while illegal guns are a bad thing for sure, the sentence is disproportionate. Therefore, it is wrong, but given our power-crazed ruling class, I am not overly shocked, though it still saddens me.
