Well... after searching about I found some for $40 for 440 rounds!
Flippin eck I thought, that is about 6 pence a shot!

But it is in the U.S.

Considering shipping would only be about £30-40 and tax and import dutys would only make the total to less than £70 quid. ( which would only buy me about 150 rounds over here ).

Is there something I am missing?
Are there restrictions on ordering ammo from the U.S?

If I can find somewhere closer like where the ammo was made, like Ukraine, would there be a problem ordering from there?

Maybe if you were a dealer and wanted to buy around 100k rounds the Ukrainians would deal with you......seriously though I ordered some 54r last week and was told its taking a while to get hold of for obvious reasons given whats going on in the Middle East and the Ukraine.

I gave up using milsurp 7.62x54 ammo most of it has corrosive primers and can ruin your bore very quickly. I want my milsurps to be in the best condition possible I don't want to spoil them in any way for future generations of shooters. I only ever feed my milsurps with my own reloaded ammunition using the best components available . I can build home loads for very reasonable money and there is absolutely no reason for me or any body else to feed there collection with rubbish milsurp ammo.

On the other side of the coin I shoot 54r (and 7.62x39) milsurp all the time, I clean properly after each shoot and have had no problem with corrosion, my barrels are hard chrome lined and were designed to shot this stuff.A flush with hot water is all that's needed to neutralise the corrosive salts,followed by normal oiling etc.I wouldn't say milsurp is rubbish, if you are paper-punching then you may see a bigger group size than you will with commercial ammo and handloads.......but an ETR at Sennybridge won't know the difference!.

Buying misurp from Europe is going to be easy enough, you will need an import licence despite being in the EU, the seller will need some form of export paperwork for his own country and there will be a shipping charge to allow for.

The first two are easy enough, the shipping is not so good as the seller will probably expect you to buy a pallet full as a minimum.

I looked at sourcing from Eastern Europe in the past and found a seller who was happy to sell me a 50,000 palette of the finest Czech 7,62x 54R or 39 rounds.
Of course Sergei could sell a smaller quantity but the transport cost for the palette was the same at ~ € 500, ie : the more you fit into the crate the cheaper it end-up costing.
If we find a nice FAD that can act as the middle man & hold 2 or 3K for me and if you want the other 47K, we are in business

"Ammunition" and "Cheap"are not two words that go together these days.

Don't forget that you'll have to pay for special carriage is it comes into the category of "Dangerous goods". The export license will have to be paid for, the import license will have to be paid for, you'll have to organise a dealer to handle/store it for you - all of this costs money.

This will very soon mushroom into a very expensive exercise assuming you can even get the ammo into the country - why do you think so few people do it?

If it were easy, I'd be importing Swiss GP11 7.5x55mm ammo from Europe, but it isn't, which also explains why the sole importer of GP11 charges an arm and a leg for it.

There's an easy answer - hand loading.
