No4 Mk1/2 to 2A/2A1 stock interchangeability

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

Can anyone tell me how different the No4 Mk1/2 and 2A/2A1 stocks are, I have a 2A1 in a plastic aftermarket stock and was thinking of dropping the barrelled action into something like a Boyds laminate stock, it would tidy the rifle up and give it another lease of life and will probably be a lot cheaper than trying to find original parts.

Use an SMLE stock for the 2A1 as the No4 stock doesn't fit all that well.

All very well but it won't fit the 2A/2A1, he needs SMLE woodwork.

I understand SMLE woodwork fits however this particular rifle is missing so many parts and has already been modified so I would not be able to easily restore it to original. Hence the question can I fit No4 woodwork because if so I will look for a nice laminate sporting stock to build the barrelled action into.

The real alternative is to find someone who makes a laminated stock for an SMLE however I doubt that is going to happen.

Anyone?

Boyds do a laminated butt for the SMLE but not sure if they do the rest of the stock which I assume is where your problems lie. Knowing the popularity of the SMLE both in the US and Australia, I'm pretty sure there must be a laminated stock available for it somewhere.

Another possibility is the US auction site "Gunbroker" - there is at least one laminate stock currently listed - worth keeping an eye on.
