Stock Makers Hand Screws

#1 Post by Blu »

Does anyone know of anywhere in the UK where I could get a pair of Stock makers hand screws for the M96 Swede. I tried getting a set here in the US but all I can get is screws for the M98 which I already have a set of and they do not fit the M96. Any help would be most appreciated.

Blu, do you mean for bedding jobs and general assembly checking? I make my own with stainless threads and aluminium T handles usually from whatever is in the off-cuts bin, any idea what the threads are on the M96?

Hi Ovenpaa, yep these are for bedding a stock. That M96 barred action I picked up last year, that's the one I'm going to glass bed. The thread size which is 1/4 x 22 tpi isn't the problem as they are the same for the M98 and the M96, the problem is the bolt head, the M98 bolt head is a teeny bit too big for the M96. The M98 is .390" and the M96 is .364", also I noticed that the long screw (rear) isn't a good fit for the Swede rear bolt hole that would have to have the shoulders turned back about 3/16".

I reckon I'm going to knock out the T handles and stick them in the lathe and turn them back to where they need to be. I can't find any specifically for the M96 and thought I'd ask on here on the off chance that someone might know where to get a set over there if indeed they exist before I had at them. Not a big deal as I can replace the the M98 set should I need a set in the future.

Thanks for the reply buddy.
