Well oomans, we're just back from a splendiferous scoff with a touch of shooting and science thrown in. We kicked off with a short talk on muskets and archery, then pawed over to Ryan Stevenson who presented his study on the the influence of neck annealing on accuracy. Ryan and Tim Stewart loaded and shot 1260 cartridges, studying the effects of annealing time and intensity on the grain size, structure and hardness of the case neck and thus the degree to which this then gripped the bullet before letting it free. The effects of neck turning were also studied. Tim has agreed that the results of the work can be put online here, so we won't let more of the cat out of the bag now as you'll shortly be able to access the whole dissertation.*

Would be interesting to see the results of the tests as I've annealed 1000s of cases and firmly believe that the consistency of case neck tension is improved if the necks are annealed. The science might be able to identify the best temperature to reach and the time at that temperature, accepting the negative effects of overheating the whole of the case by conduction and the limitations of the equipment available to the home loader.
