Portable shooting bench.

#1 Post by DW58 »

To cut a long story short, I find shooting prone very difficult these days, and benches are a rare commodity on Scottish ranges, there are some at Cawdor, but only for 100/200m.

I had priced benches by MTM and Intershoot which ran around the £100-£140 mark delivered. I also saw a legs-only package advertised on ebaY for £30.

Armed with a set of these, a piece of MDF and some self-adhesive neoprene sheet for a non-slip surface, my son made this for me. I tried it out in prototype form at Cawdor on Tuesday and a few mods later it's finished - I'm delighted, total cost about £45.

That looks OK. Do you always shoot on hard standing, if not it would be worth making some stepped levelling plates to spread the load and level things up if you are shooting on grass or similar.

That's a good idea as we're usually on grass. I used the bench on Tuesday evening and it didn't seem to sink much (I'm guessing there's gravel under the grass), but plates might be a good idea. I'll try it with something under the legs tomorrow/Tuesday. The feet are already adjustable so plates would be all that are needed.

We use scaffold feet for our camper, flat and very solid and usually available free or dirt cheap

Well, he's an impoverished student - trouble is we're a long way from you :good:

Now fully range-tested (last evening at 600m), it does the job nicely

Do you have a link to ebay for the legs ... I have a need for some similar.
