K31 proven loads

Hi, I have K31, which I wish to use on ranges from 40 to 1000. I know lead will do the trick to 300 with 5744 but it is pushed to 1000 without the correct powder.
1. Has anyone experience with the K31, shooting lead long range and what powder do they use. eg. 4064 3031 etc. I can't afford to chop and change powders to develop a load. Need a mortgage for powder nowadays
2. I need to use one powder for lead and jacketed. The lead is around 195gn, (311180Gr) FN K-31 5 cavity GC. and jacketed (174gn PPU).

Any info on any powders and bullets would be fantastic. sign85 :flag5:

For getting a suitable velocity for shooting cast out to 1000 yards you will need to get a lot more ducks lined up than just the powder.

Bullet selection, fit, alloy, cast quality and weight consistency come first. Then good concentric case prep.

Regarding powders, generally speaking for long range velocities then the slowest powder you can get away with is usually better. A look at jacketed loads for the desired velocity can be a good starting point. What data sources do you use?

Hi Dromia, thanks for that info. I suspected there was more to it. I will stick to 600 yds max, using lead and jacketed rounds. I was hoping someone would see the post and offer some idea on powders they have used.
I realise slow powders are the norm for longer distances but I wondered about a compromise, as I can't hurl lead at HV at my club.
My sources come from here and The Swiss Forum, plus chatting to others who shoot at Bisley and other ranges. :flag5:

There has been a lot of discussion regarding the use of TR140 for the 7,5x55 and people are reporting good things with a variety of jacketed bullets which is handy as TR140 is actually quite reasonably priced.

I believe Reloader 17 (or Elcho 17) is virtually identical to the powder in the military ammo for the 7,5 x 55.
I shoot lead alloy boolits quite satisfactorily out to 600 yards/metres using NOE's K31 boolit loaded in front of Accurate 5744 in my Schmidt Rubin 96/11.
The biggest problem I have is using the iron sights at that range as my old eyes aren't what they used to be.

Good 600 yrd target loads with lead are a lot easier to do, good boolit fit, a softish alloy, appropriate lube and keep the velocity 'tween 1600-1800 fps maximum.

For this the medium burning rate powders like N140 are not ideally suited and you are better sticking with fast rifle powders like 5744, 2400, Rel7, N110, N120 etc.
