I Think I love N140

#1 Post by Jackmanuk »

OK So i went to Barton Road yesterday, not my choice as i was working till midnight on Saturday and then again after the shoot But my guns dragged me along.

so i did some load Dev using CFE223 2400 and my new FAV N140

on top of it being a very windy day and the recoil of my gun moving it out of the chrony sights so every couple of shots i got ERRR 1

Everything is out of my CZ 750 .308 with 26" 1-12 with Mod and 155 Palma
CFE223 - the Hodgdon data says 49 Grains, but from before i just could not get on with it and was not grouping at all

46 grains:
2270
2230
2238
2204
2215
2218
2205

so a spread on 65 FPS

48 grains
2884
2907
2873
2878
2893
2902
spread of 34 Fps but groups are still 4 inch mark

48.5 grains
2886
2874
2841
I actually ran out of powder making this load so only got 3

49 grains
2932
2942
2909
2887
2873
spread of 70 something FPS

49.5 grains
2939
2923
2905
2914
2892
2944
spread 52 FPS

50 grains
2958
2986
2974
2921
2937
spreads 65 FPS

None of the loads were producing less than 3" groups

So i switched to N140

40 Grains
2403
2387
2384
2409
2417
2414
2426
2428
spread of 44 FPS , shows a 1.6" group
Image

41 grains
2452
2453
2468
2484
spread 32FPS not much of a test there but I ran out of brass

42 grains
2537
2564
2558
2546
2593
Spread of 64 FPS , but shows the tighest group
Image

and 44 grains, Again ran out of brass
2632
2652

so now i think iv found my self a new powder ....which is good after spending £70 on it, il now go .5 or so either side of 42 grains see if i can tighten it up.

My little softyware made this up with it

Range Drop Velocity Energy
(Yards) (inches) (ft/sec) (ft-lbs)

0 -1.50 2550.0 2237.9
100 0.00 2345.8 1893.8
200 -4.84 2151.4 1592.9
300 -17.21 1966.7 1331.2
400 -38.60 1790.4 1103.2
500 -70.87 1621.5 904.8
600 -116.43 1459.7 733.3
700 -178.38 1306.0 587.0
800 -260.83 1162.6 465.2
900 -369.08 1058.7 385.8
1000 -508.20 1008.1 349.7
1100 -681.57 968.1 322.5
1200 -892.14 932.3 299.2

something tells me its not a 1200 yard load :)

so whilst i was there i tried some on my original loads which was 28 grains of 2400, which i used for a cost effective load.
Now some doughnut forgot to turn the chrony back on so number aint available buts its around 2350 FPS

I was also playing around with subsonics using TrailBoss

9 Grains with 200 grain SMK
942
950
963
916
917
937
931
Sounded like a 22LR But not exactly accurate but i bring that down to the 1-12 twist

Apart from testing some others i did try this

8 grain TB 155 Palma
1027
1018
1050
1009
1002
1027
994
1005
994
1028

which actually help a group on about 2-3" which aint bad i could probally tighten that up abit

And Some GGG 2014 surplus for no reason at all
2777
2764
2782
2766
2780
2782
2773
2800
2783
2782

nothing special there any????

I would say that was very reasonable shooting. Now you need to join a club that shoots at longer distances!
