Could This Be Made To Work In The UK.

This is not really a new thing over here as there are a few schools around the country that do it. The thing here is the location of the school given past history. Personally I feel it's a good way to teach kids about firearms, take away the mystery of them and teach them the safe handling and use of firearms. Does anyone think this would or could work with pupils in the UK.

Hmmm, looking at the photo it appears the kid isn't wearing any ear protection unless they can't be seen or they were just dry firing or something else.

Don't see why not, the Liberals hold the power over here at Federal level and at State level in Colorado where this took place. My thinking is that it would be a good way of bringing much needed new blood into the sport in the UK.

If schools can decide what religion to teach and what classes as first and second languages then I see no reason they can't get onboard with something like this. I shot as an air cadet at 14 or so and the first thing drilled into me was respect for the firearm and safety at the range.

Demonic, I had much the same as you as an Army Cadet. These kids are middle school kids, that is aged 9 - 12 years old. As well as this most clubs if not all over here have youth weekends about three times a year were the kids around the same age are taught hunter safety and the safe use of firearms. Most of them are our future sportsmen/women, catch them young and keep them interested.

Shooting has become quite a fashionable thing to introduce or reintroduce to schools in the past few years, both state and private. The benefits we all know about have been borne out but there is still a lot of progress to make in overcoming the resistance that is to be expected. This is especially true as many teachers in the state education factories are very left-leaning. Many private schools have a long and proud history of shooting as a sport.

Don't be so negative towards what is happening in the UK.

Many schools have shooting teams and many more have cadet detatchments.
It may not be every school, but then it is not every school in the USA that is running these courses.

Outside ofhowever you again have cadets and even the Scouts are managing to keep shooting part of their badge work.

In London the firearm teams combined with opperation Trident (Black on Black violence) do educational talks in Schools and the community, although I accept that they are not teaching "how to shoot" for obvious reasons. I say for obvious reasons however I do remeber car theifs being given car related courses to get them away from crime!

As others have said, I believe that the best way is through cadet organisations, that's how we've always done it, we just need to push it more (despite the cuts to CCF units).

Yeah I agree that organisations such as the cadets are a good way to do it that's how I got into it, indeed we have similar organisations over here. My thinking on it was by getting it into more schools it opens it up to a far wider group of possible future sportsmen and women and there's also the educating the public side to it as well. We've had this in some of the less liberal schools here in Michigan for a fair few years now, two of my own kids went to the range with their school. I take all the points posted, just wanted to see what folks thought about it. Thanks for the replies.

I went to school until 16, and dropped out shortly after.
But my first school had an air rifle range at the summer fair (not sure if it still does) not been in a long while.
Second school I went to took a few people clay shooting on atleast one occasion and there was gun cabinets in the cellar from when they used to have guns. (wayyy back in the 80's) and my last school, well nothing to do with guns there.
That said all 3 were private schools. so I would guess state schools would never allow such a think.
A friend of mine went to a boarding school with a cadet detachment. the cadet detachment had an armoury in the school L98's (semi auto L85's) and some L86 LSW I think as well.
So there certainly about.
