Our next Thetford Gallery is scheduled for March 8th so hopefully it is all up and running again by then. It is now called Thetford CGR? whatever that means. God knows how to get into the range as the last time I went past the entrance it was part of the building site for the A11 duelling!
I think the last Barton Road was supposed to be a 'short range shoot' (300-800 yards ?) and apparently there was a lack of interest so it got pulled (the weather was rather iffy thou). Shame really.
Hi Ian,

8th March is subject to cancellation as the military may bump us off the range on that date, which is what happened with our planned 1st March date. CGR makes the distinction we are using the Gallery , rather than the ETR , range at Thetford.

I've moved the 17th May Barton Road date forward to 10th May to avoid the SARTS installation. In theory we, the Grove, has the first official booking post SARTS installation, on 21st June. I have been warned we may lose this date if the military want it or SARTS overruns.

Yes Ian, should be an interesting discussion.

The NRA are meeting the MOD on Friday to discuss a number of points around civilian use of MOD ranges. We have a great opportunity to ensure our views are taken directly to that forum.

CGR =
Converted Gallery Range CGR is a Gallery Range that has been converted to be equipped with fixed electric targets (FET),

SARTS=
SMALL ARMS RANGE TARGETRY SYSTEM (SARTS)
SARTS is a live fire range training capability that features modular equipment scalable to different environments. The system will provide UK Armed Forces with the ability to conduct small arms live fire tactical training on ranges and field firing areas to satisfy their Operational Marksmanship Standards, from basic all-arms weapons tests to advanced field firing exercises.

Regarding SARTS and LM it is interesting that the original press release states:

The contract calls for Lockheed Martin to deliver and install a suite of infantry target equipment in nearly 140 locations worldwide by March 2013. It will comprise fixed and moving range systems with accurate scoring and marking to expedite throughput and increase efficiency.

So that is a 'target' missed...

There's a temporary entrance to Thetford CGR. If you are coming from the south, go past the old entrance (which as you say is buried in the roadworks), and you will notice new post and rail fencing and a temporary roadway running parallel with the road behind the 600 yard point. Carry on to the roundabout, and there's a new entrance off the roundabout between the A11 south and A11 north junctions. Blink and you'll miss it..........

Hello David,
Have you been to the 'new and improved' Thetford CGR yet? I heard a rumour that it was only going to be the new SARTS system on lanes 1-6 or 1-8 and the rest of the lanes would stay as is, can you confirm this?
Thanks.

Hi

I haven't been yet, as Grove's first day is this Saturday coming since the 1st March date got bumped off.

I only knew about the new entrance as I've been up the A11 to Norwich twice recently and deliberately looked out of curiosity as to what the entrance now was.

I'd like to go this Saturday, but not sure if home chores will allow........
