Can cartridges be patented?

#1 Post by Dangermouse »

Here is an interesting article of a hand loader trying to patent his own calibre:
http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2011 ... -patented/

Clearly it is not in the interests of shooting to achieve this, but just think about the possible revenue should you get a calibre which grabs the attention of a military power,
I know the US military are fielding all sorts of 6mm AR style guns at the moment,

Interesting indeed, the thing is how tightly will the patent tie the design down? Change the shoulder angle by one degree or reduce the case length by ten thou and you have a totally different cartridge. As is suggested in the article just about every case/bullet variation has bee tried at some point but that does not stop someone patenting something, even if they did not design it.

Ah, there you are Ovenpaa, been busy have you?

I think you could have fun with the names you give these, can you imagine the forces firing the "Christel" or perhaps the "Zombie neutraliser" or "Fluffy Pink Tickler"

I have been prepping some .308 brass for next week ;)

I was at a 1000m shoot a couple of weeks ago and chambered a few wet rounds (Remind me to pack my towel for next time) I could see some evidence of over pressure at the time but a closer look today meant some culling of brass, the remainder has been prepped ready to go so all I need do now is prime it ready for the Viking.
Fluffy Pink Tickler?
Lets leave that conversation for the firing point

I am off to design the .338 B*stard (Insert enemy of your choice) vaporiser. The Mercans are sure to buy it ;)
