Somehow I don't feel particulary sad at this passing, he managed to live a lot longer than many in the East even if he did not earn proportionately from his invention.
listening to the radio 2 news tonight, I thought the article a little flowery and failed to mention the cold war.

To be fair to the Beeb, they phoned us up a couple of weeks back looking for input, and asking for contacts with genuine experts.

Re: RIP Mikhail Kalashnikov
What a legacy to leave - and he died skint unlike Eugene Stoner. So much for communism.

I've got mixed feelings about the man, he did arm an awful lot of our enemies with a fairly decent gun

He didn't arm our enemies, politicians did that. Also do not forget that one of the most prolific AK variants in the world is the Chinese Type 56.......which the Americans shipped into 1980s Afghanistan by the container load to arm the Mujahideen in the fight against the Russians and theres no prize for guessing who's using them now and against who.Blackstuff wrote:Look at the magazineFedaykin wrote:Or MP5, hard to tell from that angle. As Kalashnikov said many times he invented it for the defence of his Motherland and the fact so many copies have been produced is a testament to its reliability and simplicity.......terrorists and freedom fighters want a Rifle thats reliable the same as any regular army does.
Eugene Stoners inventions have also claimed a great many lives but he and his firearms have not been demonised in the same way and it could be argued that whilst Stoner did it for profit Kalashnikov did it for patriotism.
Anyway I bet Mikhail and Eugene are having a great time at the big range in the sky!!!
