The heeled boolit was common in early cartridges (look at the 22 rf) as the case and boolit were of the same external diameter with the head spacing being on the rim. That is why when they moved to internal case diameter rounds we have nomenclature anomalies like the .38 Special now taking a .357" boolit and the .44 Special taking a .429" boolit. Originally they would have taken .38" and .44" calibre heeled boolits. Also heeled boolits don't need crimping for under barrel tube magazines.

310 Cadets have been widely converted (re-chambered) to calibres like 38 special mainly in Australia and the USA, something I'd not recommend as these rifles are getting scarcer and scarcer in good shootable condition. The most popular conversion was to 32-20 as this close to the 310 Cadet in fact 32-20 cases often form the basis for conversion to 310 Cadet cases and they turn up frequently.

I like the heeled boolit as I don't have to worry about seating depth just push the boolit in till is stops, especially as I don't resize my cases, I just de-prime, re-prime, drop the powder and then hand seat the boolit in the case. The only die I need is a universal de-prime die or just a pin and a hammer to knock out the fired primer.

I use 3gns of N310 for the indoor range, should work for you but be sure to chronograph and calculate ME to confirm and then record on your sign off sheet.

There are variables between the cadet rifles, due to BSA apparently being unable to control how far the chambering reamer was pushed in. Some cadet rifles need the correct case with the rim thinned down from that of a 32-20 and some don't. If the rifle can use the unmodified 32-20 rim, it will probably chamber a longer than standard case. My own 310 uses unmodified rims and cases that are a full 0.1" longer than standard. With the standard case, I always used 4.2 grn of Unique, but, with my longer cases I use 4.5grn. I won the 100yd Rook Rifle comp at the recent Trafalgar meeting with this load---it works. Bullets seated by hand as Dromia suggests.
I have two other heeled bullet rifles, a .360no5 / .380 long and a .320. The heeled bullet in my .360 / .380 ( the rifle is stamped for both calibres), means that .38 Special cases have to be shortened for the round to chamber. The 320 is more of a problem. Cases are made by swaging down 32 S&W long brass and shortening it. The resize has to go right down to the rim and I use some simple home made tooling and a big vise. The bullet mould is home made and casts a 73 grn heeled bullet. I have not fired my 320 yet as i am waiting for my ticket to come back from the police with it added.

Aye the slower powders a better for the longer distances, my preference is for Nobel Pistol No2 5.3 gns.

There is a previous post of mine on this load here in this forum.

Mine chambers the unmodified 32-20 rim. I bought one hundred 32-20 cases a few years ago for the cadet. I also have some Bertram cases in 310 that I use for it. I can not remember the last time I fired the old girl but I intend to make use of Adams generous donation of some of his cast boolits to blow the cob webs of the old girl now that I have a range I can use it on.
I will shoot the old girl to celebrate. I have just received a letter informing me that I have completed my probationary period and am now a full member so I now have access on a regular basis to a indoor 25 yard range to shoot my toys on with reduced loads. Adam is on hand with re loading data advice and a well known supplier of cast boolits is also often seen lurking on the premises. Oh and there is tea and coffee as well.

Dromia,
With arthritis now in my spine, shoulders and hands I can't cast for long
Poor young fella, my Missus also has arthritis in her shoulder and back and she swears by this. She hates taking pills of any sort and reckons this works.

One cup of hot water with two tablespoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder taken daily. Give it a try mate, nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Thanks George, will give it a try.

It doesn't bother me too much at the moment it is tholeable, unless I try and do things and then it gets bad.

Thing with these is that all you have to look forward to is it getting worse.
