With my journo head on, the legally held detail must have come from the police. The BBc wouldn't know to ask the question. As an airgun is subject to the firearms acts, I strongly suspect this is the police fudging the issue with a bit of "news management" to add to their "taking deadly weapons off the street" shtick.

Further, BBC Essex website says that the firearm used in the shooting was "illegal".
Query: because it was an airgun in the hands of an under-18 without supervision by an over-21??

As usual the media and police faffing about with the facts for their own screwed up agenda! When the police lie for the sake of the news headlines it's a sad day for them!

The first report I saw was on Monday or Tuesday in the local online paper, the Echo. They are not well known for their accuracy. They said the firearm was legally held. When I get a chance I'll look for the page and check if they have updated it.

If the 18 year old was using a gun that was not licensed to him, then it would be "illegally held". The fact that they seized other "legally held" guns from the same address (and the 18 year old has been charged with drugs offences) then it may be that the 18 year old is a bit of a "wrong 'un" and got access to his Father's gun cabinet to show off.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm and drug offences. He has been released on police bail until 6 January.
A police spokeswoman said the 18-year-old was "related" to one of the boys, but would not say which.
She said the owners of the property were not in the house at the time, but were nearby when the child was shot.
A number of licensed firearms were also kept at the property, police say. These guns have been removed."

Idiots and filth more like it. They should have kept the fckwit in jail, drugs - always an excuse isn't it.
It was a drug addict that killed the kid in Easterhouse with an air rifle.
Why do we pander to drug addicts instead of just O/d'ing them and getting it over with. They're already dead inside anyway so what does it matter!
