If you read up on the old metfords, the rifling wears out very quickly when used with modern FMJ nitro loads. I don't think that the Enfields are similarly afflicted but this stuff it Victorian so it deserves gentle handling.

I am a sinner though and have been using PPU in mine
I was also considering a 'Long Lee', if I couldn't get a suitable Martini (in an ideal world I'd have both)

I do worry about barrel wear, even with my SMLE - I've been shooting 600+ rounds a year down it, but as it's usually at 200 yards I'm using the lightest loads I can that are still accurate.....and am now considering changing to cast boolits for it...

No, cast boolits are not difficult to make, load and shoot.

Dodgyrog manages to do it so there is the evidence that it has to be simple.

I have never heard of British made Martini Metfords or Enfield in good condition not having been up to "modern" use, whatever that means. The original 303 BP cartridge had a higher chamber pressure than its smokeless successor.
