They are a bit. Like the bicycle builder said: Strong, Light, Cheap – pick any two, but for digital balances it’s something like: Fast (settle time), Sensitive, Stable, High-resolution, Cheap – pick any four. Lots of people get great results with strain-gauge balances though, so as long as your measurement technique is good and expectations reasonable they can do the job very well.

Yeah, you get what you pay for I guess (well if you're lucky). The gem pros are pretty good so far. The important thing for me is repeatability. If I weigh a bullet, I want it to have the same weight 10 minutes later. I had some lymans ones, but they weren't accurate enough +/- .1 grain is not good for me (should have read the small print ) gempro read to .02 grain
Not so worried about absolute accuracy. As long as the same weight of powder always gives the same reading that should be good enough. Since our start load is somethng like 10% under max, that should leave plenty of leeway.

I'm sure you all at onetime or another have the need to count things like cases or bullets for batching etc.
...
I've seen that you can get counting scales where you weigh one of the thing and then put a bunch on and it works out how many there are based on the weight of the bunch and the unit item weight.

Has anybody got any experience of using one of these ?

Just took delivery of an Adam CBC8 counting balance. First impressions are that it's very good for use as a reloader's counting balance.

The 8Kg capacity will handle about 700 .308 cases, 800 155gr bullets, 600 200gr bullets, and the balance has a resolution of 0.2 grams so it's useful for general weighing duty (but not for powder charges or component batching, of course). The size of the pan is large enough for the kind of containers that would hold 500 cases. It's very easy to use:

• Zero the balance and/or tare the container.
• Place a known quantity of items in the container, and enter the quantity using the numeric keypad.
• Place the items to be counted in the container.

The displays indicate the total weight, individual item weight and count.

Brief initial testing found it to be accurate for quantities of 200 to 300 .308 cases. On counting a known quantity of 583 .308 cases I did see an error of 1 either way - this might be improved by using a larger sample to get a better average (I used 10 cases), or perhaps there is just too much variation in case weights to get perfectly accurate counts of more than about 300 cases. Despite this it's a very useful tool that will come in very handy when making larger batches.

could I be cheeky and ask how much?
the website seems not to have pricing. I did get the one I was looking at - in fact I had three of them before I called time on it and asked for my cash back.
The first one would reset it self when you put more cases on, so I was looking to batch in 50's and as i was dropping in a few at a time it would just reset.
The second one only showed an error code after the first batch of things it weighed.
The third one was the same as the first although it did work properly for about half an hour.

It was a bit, erm, pricier than the eBay ones (but it works!).
Including VAT, delivery, Credit card surcharge, it was a fraction over £200.00.
