Cast Boolit velocities

I was shooting on Century range yesterday at 300 yards (metres? whatever!).
As usual I was using cast boolits in my 308/7,62 Parker Hale 1200TX. Iron sights were a problem as the front iris was too large for the target and it was difficult to get a decent group. I was getting them in the black but struggling a bit with a swirling wind (not my stomach, I hasten to add).
One of the lads set up his Oehler Chronograph to use and I took the opportunity to test my reloads.
The Loverin design 311467 around 170gr was achieving a respectable 2150fps using 26gr Accurate 5744 (Lovex D060).
The 155gr semi spitzer was achieving a surprising 2650fps average velocity driven by 40gr Accurate 2520
This is the highest velocity I have achieved with cast projectiles and the down range performance was ok.
No leading whatsoever.
So those of you frightened of using lead boolits fearing a barrel smeared from end to end with lead it is possible to replicate jacketed bullet velocities with lead.

So long as you have god boolit fit, alloy and lube appropriate to the application then condom velocities and accuracy are achievable with cast.

Personally for anything over 2000 fps I would be using slower powders like IMR 4350, Ramshot Big Game, Vihtavuori N160 and the like, 5477 is definitely too fast a powder for serious accuracy at over 2000 fps in my experience. Getting leading free velocity is relatively easy with cast but getting velocity and consistent accuracy requires a bit more effort and well made, QC'd boolits.

When I used to shoot .303 competitively my best load was a 200 gn boolit at 2,200 fps which I shot out to 1000 yrds with some success, there was no difference in my averages 'tween cast and condom loads.

Velocity is not the first requirement for cast bullets (that cannot be pushed as fast as jacketed),you can get accurate loads at low velocity.

But what they do at 600yds???

Small bores are unsuitable for 600 yards(using cast bullets).You probably need to use big bore,these are succesful at long range up to 1000 yards.

It seems that you are succesful with small bore and that is certainly interesting.Do you mind letting other people know the way you do it.

Good boolit choice that is heavy for the calibre, appropriate alloy tough not hard, appropriate lube, excellent boolit fit, a slow for the load powder and tight QC on your boolits.

There are other tricks like flared cases, buffers and the like that may or may not be appropriate depending on the circumstances.

Have been shooting cast boolits for years out to 1000 yrds mainly in 303's and had at least the same average as when I used jacketed.

Shooting out to 600 with good accuracy with cast is easy, once you want to go further then more attention to detail and a good understanding of your rifle, the cartridge and their relationships to cast boolits is necessary.
