The article nicely avoids stating exactly where the dog was though. Was it on the Golf Course or in the owner's garden?

In the garden; then it should be taken further. Running loose on the Golf Course; a different situation.

I notice that only the dog owner used the phrase "cant tell the difference". A more likely situation was that the shooter had no backstop and possibly missed a rabbit and the bullet carried on to hit the dog. Or depending on the round being fired it went straight through the rabbit and the hit the dog.

However, in the third paragraph it specifically states: "Four-year-old Wilma was killed just yards from her owner’s garden." Which now answers my initial question - the dog was probably on the Golf Course. And how far is "yards? 5, 10, 100?

sorry, you are making excuses for a situation that neither you or I know the details of, there may be extenuating circumstances and hopefully they will come to light, in the meantime the dog is dead, and if it was on the golf course so what? is that a reason to shoot it? the sheep argument is spurious.

No, I originally raised the point about all of the facts not being known and the full story was not being told. I then corrected the statement about it being "in the garden".

Again, I did not raise the issue of sheep, someone else did and all I did was point out that sheep can be found on golf courses.

Whippet != fox, and != rabbit. Therefore, do not shoot it.

Mistaken identity is sometimes a fair call when out lamping, but this isn't one such situation. I feel for the family concerned.

All that said, I have told a neighbour of mine not to let her dog out alone after dark because she looks like a fox cub - certainly you could legitimately say "I saw the eyes, identified it and shot it." and be completely genuine and correct when saying so. Should be better now as this year's cubs are getting older, but earlier in the year on the stubble, could have really been a problem.
