"surfing tunnel"

#1 Post by artiglio »

Good day people,

Need a bit of help from the internet technically savvy amongst you, currently working on a vessel where our internet is filtered by Fortinet "fortiguard" which blocks all but Full-Bore and the GBfclass site when it comes to anything shooting related.
On vessels with wifi , it was easy to get round using "opera mini" using an ipad, but on this boat we are restricted to desktops and are unable to load new software.
Theoretically I can ask the IT dept. to allow requested sites but these requests just disapear into the ether.
Apparently I need to use a "surf tunnel" , not surprisingly I can't access these whilst on board to set it up, so will do it on next leave.
Do any of you use such a thing that they would recommend, quite happy to pay a reasonable subscription for a service that works.

many thanks phil

Can you use your own device?

a lot of content filtering will block proxy avoidance sites (if the filtering software is anygood), so you might need to use a VPN, if so AirVPN but your network provider might only allow HTTP & HTTPS and if you aren't allowed your own devices then you are stuffed too.

You may find that VPNs are blocked too, especially if they connect to a known Proxy site and also because they consume additional bandwidth when idle. Having worked for many years with remote mobile satcom, I know exactly the problem you have. We (as service providers) would be happy - because we got the revenues but the ship and aircraft owners want to keep their costs down.

BASC have a programme at the moment which addresses blocks from mobile operators and WiFi providers who use standard blocking lists and they are being successful in getting the sites unblocked. Have a look on their website and even if you are not a member they may well act.

Take a look at https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en
Tor is a free vpn solution that tunnels through many firewalls, it is used by many people to bypass filtering restricts for "good" and "bad" reasons.

The browser bundle makes setup easier as it gives you the vpn software and a pre-configured browser in a simple package which doesn't need to be installed you just run it from a folder which might get round your issue of installing software.

I use Tor but be aware that it can be very slow at times and is only really designed for surfing not downloading.
