What's a safe way of removing rust as I have just got a Marlin 1894 Cowboy underlever and noticed a bit of surface rust on the bottom of the mag tube when I was fiddling with it today, I didn't notice it on Thursday when I tried it as all the metal work is well oiled. I did think about a bit of steel wool but don't want to take off the blueing?

0000 grade steel wool with some oil, lightly rubbed. That should see you sorted.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

No it won't and it works a treat. I've lightly used green abrasive sponges with oil and the gun comes up looking like new.

Salut ,
When I "restore/preserve" militaria items I use a solution of oxalic acid. It will take the rust without damaging the surrounding paint or bluing. The rust does not come back on the parts treated.

I normally buy it in powder form and disolve it in warm water ~ 1/10 ratio.
If you dont want to soak the entire item in the solution, a barrel for exemple or the outside of a helmet, you can dip a cloth in the solution and leave it in contact with the item.
It is very important that you neutralise the acid on the item immediatly after you remove it : ie, get the item out of the solution and clean it with clear or slightly soapy water otherwise a white-ish depot will form.
