Which calibre for longer range.........

So I've joined the NRA with a view to occasional trips to Mecca for a bit of long(er) range shooting. My club's facilities are restricted to 25, 50 & 100m hence my current .45 ACP Rem 700.

I'm putting in for a variation and would like suggestions for a new barrel for the Rem using a cartridge based on the .243/.308/.45ACP bolt face which would also work with the AICS mag system. Only going to be shooting it a handful of times per year when I can get a day pass.

Was thinking of just getting a .308 but is there something more appropriate for all of the Bisley ranges?

6,5x47 is always fun and it is all but impossible to load an inaccurate round plus they are kind on the shooters pocket and shoulder once you have the brass... Alternatively you could go for the humble .308 and just get shooting, the 284 is nice but to get the most out of it means pricey bullets.

What about a .260? that would be a very handy choice, good to 1200 yards, cheap to build for and pleasant to shoot.

If you take Ovenpaas' advice and get a 260 you will not be displeased!

Good olde fashioned 6.5x55 Swedish is no slouch out to 1000 yards either, and very kind on barrels.

If you just want an off the shelf rifle though get a 308 tikka t3 varmint or tactical.

The 260 does sound like the better option for range, but I wonder if a .308 might be best from an "ease of use" perspective with my limited range time. I think I'll put in for both, get the .308 first for the time being and the .260 when I get a bit more range time available in a year or two.

The 308 will deffo be the best for ease of use mate. Lots of guns and lots of quality components
