I would anneal the PPU after their first firing.
A drill, a bit, a blow torch and some tempilaq and you are good to go.
Do a site search I'm sure its been covered in some detail here before.

Don't know what happened to my post, whether it didn't post or was pulled for some reason.
Basically PPU pistol brass is not good, I had 100 new from Kranks and several had the same problem after 2 orr 3 firings using 5.4gr of TiteGroup which is a lower load than your Unique.
Best thing I did is buy Starline brass, best pistol case brass you can get, have a look on Danske Gevaer http://danskgevaer.com they have Starline at £18/100
Just dug out the following photo, again, 3 times fired, trimmed to length, chamfered etc. and only 5.4gr of TiteGroup, lovely split. After that one all the PPU cases went into the bin.

I'm not an experienced loader or a metallurgical expert - but I would hazard a guess that the type of crimp on the factory rounds (where it is not just squeezing the rim, but actually re-shaping it) doesn't take well to being re-sized and then roll-crimped; making it unsuitable for reloading...which is a shame, as it makes the factory PPU even more expensive if you can't reload the cases...

Re: .44 Magnum brass splitting !
that's about what my thoughts are,its a very strange permanent style factory crimp and on close inspection the splits are all in line with the crimp marks !Dougan wrote:I'm not an experienced loader or a metallurgical expert - but I would hazard a guess that the type of crimp on the factory rounds (where it is not just squeezing the rim, but actually re-shaping it) doesn't take well to being re-sized and then roll-crimped; making it unsuitable for reloading...which is a shame, as it makes the factory PPU even more expensive if you can't reload the cases...
like you said its a bummer that you buy the factory rounds and you cannot reuse the brass. sign01
