My first time at Bisley

Shot at Bisley for the first time today at the N.R.A. open day had a great time but the queues were very long nice way to spent a saturday but my feet hurt and it's a long drive from Norfolk :shakeshout:

There is something very special about driving in through the main gate at Bisley and after all these years I still get a kick out of shooting at Bisley. Hopefully you will enjoy many more warm days at Bisley and no doubt a few cold and wet days as well.

I was coaching 300yds TR Hope you had a go!?

Had a string of 4 shooters at the end who could all shoot & was greatly satisfying to keep them in the bull explaining when to shoot on 2 flag positions for a bull. One was a 22TR shooter who I explained how we use MoA to track & predict the next shot wind vs the flags & corrected fall of shot & he was hooked instantly "there is so much more to this than small bore!" A new member was signed up :shakeshout: & he asked if he could learn to this with small bore so I grabbed my Anschutz 22 with an old AEClark ladder sight welded to a on Walther sight base clamp & he did a V first shot with it at 300! :goodjob:

I do think we should use small-bore with 'proper calibrated sights' more to train people how to track & plot & predict the wind. It would accelerate peoples development & performance in TR thus keep them motivated.

To give it a try grab a BSA or adapt a BSA sight on to your 22 & download a NRA 300yds proportionate to 100 target & some plot diagrams & ............

That's a very good idea given the relative costs of .22 and centre fire ammunition. Next time I'm going for a variation I shall put another .22 slot on my FAC for .22 target rifle.

I like Bisley, I know a lot of people get perturbed by how Bisley centric the NRA is, or is perceived to be, but it's got a great sense of history about it, it's like stepping back in time with all the old buildings. It's rough round the edges, and the facilities are not generally special, but the fact that exists in leafy Surrey where land values are so high remains remarkable.

When you look at how good the Lord Roberts centre is in comparison with the rest, it shows you what might have been achieved if some of the Olympics money had been used at Bisley instead of providing facilities that have probably been removed by now. It peeves me more than slightly.

How good is it? The air range shakes and vibrates. The SUIS targetry is poorly maintained, unreliable and outdated. It is not up to the standards that would make it attractive for elite shooters, and it is too expensive to make it attractive to others.

NSRA - As a modern building it has none of the charisma & character of Bisley it looks awful from Kings way a huge ugly concrete wall on the right of the entrance to the site. Mind you the loos are better than most at Bisley!

I hear the business rates on the place are crippling the NSRA? the response if less shooting & more other sporting activities to help pay for it. As a member I used to be able to rock up with 3 kids & shoot air rifle after the Queens final for £12 an hr now the they want day membership & it works out at +£30 for an hr! for air rifle & bring own pellets & targets!

Think I prefer the atmosphere & facilities of the Surrey, Old Sergeants mess, The NLRC, LMRA & a few others.
