Steyr SSG P1 155g VERSUS 168 g bullets on a S class target
Over the last couple of months I have treated my self to some LE Wilson kit in various calibers but in particular for the .308.
I normally shoot 155grain Amax bullets through my Steyr SSG P1 but I found a factory target in the box it came in with details of the round that was apparently a 168grain bullet. There was also reloading data from the previous owner including drop charts.
So I loaded up 155g bullets and 168g bullets and fired them at the target that the guys are proposing to use for the S class thingy.
I was intending to stick the target up at 300yards but because of range limitations in my neck of the woods I only managed 129yards according to my range finder.
I had a bit of a bad start my scope was set up for 300yds it was a early start and very cold and I was still half asleep. I eventually clicked as to what was going on. I set my scope up for 100yards and bingo all in the middle. The end result was at these distances I will stick with the 155g there is no advantage using the 168grain jobbies.
I love this Le Wilson gear its the business. A cracking days shooting 6" of snow piled up at the side of the road but really bright and quiet warm a bit cold if the wind got up. Great stuff had a play with some Lantac stuff as well good kit. Our club bought a gun of them.

Nice one - any pictures of the target and/or your rifle?
BTW How heavy is your rifle? David's and Christel's are basically right on the 6kg limit, whereas mine is a lightweight at 4.6kg, just wondering where your set up fits in?

155 amax seem to work well in my ancient BRNO zkk 308 ,don't have a long range to try but the grouping at 100 is spot on. Weighs in a 5kg all up.

Not sure of the weight I guess I should weigh my set up to see if it fits the bill. I binned the target because it was shot at 100yards well 129yards actually according to the range finder so it was not eligible for S class.
Its a pity there is not a 100 yard class I don't think I will be able to compete at 300yds-600yds etc due to range limitations. I would guess 100yards is not enough of a challenge.
Any way I am drifting off the subject this is a reloading forum. I am not sure I have got the bushing right in the Wilson neck die I might have to purchase a few more. The bullet seating seems to take a bit of force on the arbor press I think this one might be a bit tight. I am still getting used to the Wilson set up. The loaded ammo worked well enough though.

Can't help you with the Wilson - I use the stuff you can't abide!
From memory you're up in the North of England aren't you? Dromia is planning to shoot S-Class maybe you could tee something up with him as far as a suitable range is concerned - just a thought. Dodgyrog might be able to help as well.

What 168's were you using?
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

If you're up here in the North I have some Nosler Custom Competition 168s if you'd like to try them, my SSG04 gives 1/2 MOA with them (same as A-Max and Lapua Scenar 168s).
Seated to Saami spec it still shoots sub-MOA but prefers 2.875" which is 20thou off the lands for my chambering.

From one SSG shooter to another, you'll find the 168gr Amax bullets group better beyond 300yds than the 155gr.

I don't have access to a range that is over 300yards. I am going to stick with the 155grain Amax.
I am struggling to find a 25yard range to shoot my under levers on never mind full bore rifles.
If I want to shoot then I have to travel be it .22 or full bore. There is nothing local. I have tried contacting clubs in the area and some of them who have contact details on here. But very little response.
