Rifle shooting .. Position of the "front" hand
Curious, I've seen people shoot with the forward hand "both ways" ie with the thumb on the left if the stock and others with the hand reversed and the thumb in the right of the stock .. (Assuming a right handed shooter) are there particular reasons for this other than simple preference ?
One tv shooter ( that gunny from lock 'n' load) seems to use both ?!?!

Hmmm, seems like thumbs get in the way. Do without 'em, bald monkeys...

I saw the Gunny using the thumb on the right method and copied it. It took a while to adapt to it but it works well for me as it gives a secure support for the rifle if the arm is drawn into the shooters chest so that the supporting arm is much more rigid.
I use it all the time now, even for gallery rifle events.

The "thumb on the right" became popular within the USMC target shooting fraternity. Its quite good for certain types of target shooting position, but where it falls down is in military practices where the position has to be changed and/or there is a timed element involving reloads - the reverse grip simply doesn't allow quick weapon handling.

How do you 'reverse' your hand and is it painful? Is this the 'reversed' technique?zzr1100 wrote:Curious, I've seen people shoot with the forward hand "both ways" ie with the thumb on the left if the stock and others with the hand reversed and the thumb in the right of the stock .. My left hand grips the rifle butt, with the arm resting underneath me.

different technique, used to limit the flip up of a rifle in rapid fire, the hold being talked about is shown at 12.35 (if you can't be bothered to watch the whole programmeBlackstuff wrote:How do you 'reverse' your hand and is it painful? Is this the 'reversed' technique?zzr1100 wrote:Curious, I've seen people shoot with the forward hand "both ways" ie with the thumb on the left if the stock and others with the hand reversed and the thumb in the right of the stock ..
