Back stop height

Some research undertaken by a committee member has established that if we were to build a range on flat land with "no danger area" then we need a backstop 23m high! Is this correct for a 100m rifle range? I know it is lower for shorter ranges. Does anybody have any experience of this for civilian ranges?

thats a serious height! and it will most likely involve a much wider base are to support it! I would imagine IanWR would be the man to talk to.

Mike get someone to give JB arbroath club a shout i'm pretty sure he got a copy of the range criteria thingy.Perhaps restricting 100m to prone only might reduce the height required.

Get a copy of the range consruction notes from the NRA or NSRA. There are ways around it such as the use of baffles.

None of the ranges I ever shot on had a 23m hight back stop. (Unless it was a mountain!)

There are ways of preventing the escape of projectiles which migh go over a back-stop, as someone has mentioned, by the use of baffles.

The NRA's consultant on these matters was laid off with the rest of us old buggers, I don't know if Iaian now has this responsibility.

There are a number of retired army SASC officers who now offer themselves as 'consultants' but that route will cost you money.

thinking about it, I'm sure the Naval range at Portsmouth had/has at least that high a backstop, it proved not high enough to stop one sea cadet sending the back end of a Bren mag over the top towards Gosport when I was there on a marksmans course in the mid seventies sign01
