JenksOne reads from time to time of imbeciles vandalising or urinating upon such memorials, and I am not sure that any punishment or humiliation can ever be adequate. A few years ago I was at Lutyens’s overwhelming memorial to the 72,000 missing of the Somme, and a school party was playing football under its arches. The slovenly teacher in charge could not understand our outrage: perhaps he does now
