What hearing protection

Hey all, just wanted your opinions on hearing protection.

I have been using a pair of peltor ear defenders for a few years now, although they do a marvellous job of blocking out the sound and keeping my ears warm they are a bit big, and having a normal conversation is tricky with them on! They do at times get in the way too.

So, I purchased a set of Surefire EP5's to try out. I was disappointed to read they only have a lifespan from 3 to 6 months, worst case scenario this will cost me £60 a year if they wear out in 3-ish months. Does anybody have any experience of the longevity of these?

What do you all use? What do you recommend, and what did they cost you?

I've been running these for about a year now and think they are great. Slim, comfortable for all day wearing especially with gel inserts. The stereoscopic sound pick up is first rate which I find especially useful in the field where you need all your senses. These are the only muffs I've found I would consider stalking with.

Pricey but for me worth it as I've tried all sorts of hearing protection over the years all of which have protected my hearing but none have done it so effortlessly as these.

In all honesty, get the best hearing protection you can afford....

That said, there are worthy ear duffs out there that don't cost the earth.

I have a set of Peltor SportTac. About £110. I put them on as soon as I get to the range whilst behind the point chatting and the like, and other are shooting. Then, my turn on the line, I'll also fit a pair of molded plugs, about 50 quid.

The army and the police nearly cost me my hearing. I have noise induced hearing loss in the high frequencies, in my left ear. I won't get that back....

Totally agree with you there. I'll be taking my peltors with me on Sunday as well as the surefires if they turn out to be crap!

What do you all use? What do you recommend, and what did they cost you?

I went to Boots and they sold a 5-pack of sleeping plugs for about £3.00, they even come with a little box for the plugs. They're cheap, and they work. I also find that as they're plugs, they don't catch the stock like some ear "cans" do.

I use Peltor Sportacs, if you shop about on Ebay you can get them for around £90, never had an issue with clashing with the stock. Perfect on thr firing point as you can hear any conversation with out risking your ears

when its your hearing its not worth skimping!!

i use sordins the same as dromia and they are simply the best muffs you can buy in my humble opinion with first rate back up as well!

MSR Sordins for both of us in this house. I am yet to find something as comfortable or effective as them.

Peltor electronic somethings I picked up in the US for about $60.00 I also had great results with a pair of electronic bright yellow things from an industrial tool powershop in Fife. Lasted a couple of years and only £35.00.

Half the price of gunshop stuff but worked a treat.

Yes, get the best you can afford as said - and ones that work for and fit you. I find the Peltors get a bit sore on the lugs after prolonged wear on the range. Don't assume more expensive is always better.

I notice in the States they have Db reduction levels on the packs and sales blurb, that's a good help too.
