Full-Auto at Bisley?

#1 Post by judders »

I popped along to Melville at Bisley yesterday to muck around with my .22 and whilst I was there could here someone - possibly on Stickledown - shooting something that I swear was fully automatic and certainly sounded larger than a .22.

Did my ears deceive me, or is it likely someone was having much more fun than I was?

I've seen the police firing semi-auto weapons there on the small range behind the 800-yrd line but usually in the week.

Probably. There are convicted drug dealing TV personalitites that are afforded greater "rights" than us when it comes to firearms....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

I know the range you mean. Could well have been the Police then. Do they have any full-auto guns? I thought they just had semi-auto. This really didn't sound like a semi-auto, unless someone there has a REALLY fast trigger finger.

Isn't there occasionally a Section 5 weapon shoot at Bisley a few times per year organised by the Army? There was a link for it posted on PW at the start of the year for one in March/April IIRC which i couldn't make, but a note that if it was successful another could be held in June but then i couldn't find the link again to check up  I think it was about £220 but i suspect you'd get a pitiful amount of ammo on each gun

If it's the event I'm thinking of, the shooting for these is usually conducted at Pirbright and doesn't include full auto. Some of the Pirbright firing points are as close to Melville as some Stickledown points though, so Army shooting there could be the source of full-auto firing noise, if that's what the OP heard. I believe Stickledown has field firing range certification, and I've seen full auto on Stickledown and Century.

I think Stickledown is still a limited danger area gallery range - doubtless IainWR will be along shortly to set us straight!

Certainly the range on the far right hand side of Pirbright, a 100m moving mechanical target trainer range, is cleared for full auto. It's about 150yds as the crow flies between the end firing points on that range and the access road to the butts on Stickledown.

Pirbright was in full use yesterday and one of their full auto ranges is just beyond Melville, so that was probably what you heard.
