I'll contact my friend to get a more accurate account. As far as I remember, four Rapier launchers had been helicoptered forward in darkness a few hours before the arrival of the ships, for the specific reason of covering the landing. As I understand it, they had been told to provide coverage over a different bay, possibly Pleasant Island Bay, where there is also a track that connects with the Darwin road. Possibly a change of plan by the RN or someone, but the orders to the AD either didn't get changed or there was simply no heli lift to move the launchers. IIRC the ships were about 4km away, and shielded by terrain. I don't think any IFF (the "Identification Friend or Foe" recognition code transponder in aircraft) was being used by the Harriers, so the launchers were on "weapons tight" and visual ID. Hence the Skyhawks got in at extreme range (4+ clicks away) and possibly behind terrain.Blu wrote: The AD coverage had to have been set up after the Sir Gallahad was attacked because at the time of the attack the only AD were the guys on the ground.

Rearlugs, hey brother you could well be correct, just because I didn't see any AD doesn't mean they weren't there. We left Bluff Cove at nightfall the day after the Sir Gallahad was attacked to advance onto Wireless Ridge.Rearlugs wrote:I'll contact my friend to get a more accurate account. I forgot a few gats from my list:
AK47/AKM/AK74
(inc. full auto test of about fifteen mags, trying to elicit a jam. Only jam turned out to be where some iraqi had put a spent bullet into an empty case! The AK in question made up of random parts picked out of a drain where they'd dumped weapon parts. By contrast, my SA80A2 jammed solid during a mild dust-storm...)
RPD
RPK
SVD
PKP
PKM (IMHO probably world's best MG along with GPMG/MAG)
DShK
RPG7
All of the above great fun in that they generally came with limitless ammunition, wide open spaces - and no range rules!
So...... what shall we blat off next?

Well didn't exactly shoot it but fired it all the same from a small dingy in the sea off the east coast of engelund somewhere.
1 1/2 kg of C4 a det, 300m of 80 grain det cord and a small power supply called a shrike. and "SHOT" a 1000 lbs WW2 UXB under water we were about 200m away when it went. Only thing that spoiled it was the divers put the charge on the side and not on top so didn't get a lot of reflection from the sea bed. Have a video of it and will post if thats possible. Spectacular all the same and one I will never forget.
Others come to mind are GPMG, MG42 AK74 Thomson 45 Deslile Carbine Sig 210-6 used to get a lot of hammer bite from it and S&W Model 52 I had to hand in 2 of them

Main gun of a Challenger tank. No doubt it pales in comparison the a ships gun, etc but it's the largest i've ever shot myself.
Like others here, i've shot the usual man portable stuff: GPMG, Law 80, RPG, etc. We also used to knock up our own claymore types which was fun.

You need to host it on YouTube and then provide a link here.forbie wrote:

Why did kamikaze pilots wear helmets?
God loves stupid people, that is why he made so many of them.

Full auto STEN, version with the wood stock, the full auto Thompson was a close second. Fired a full auto MG 38 that was punishment, all three full auto guns, much fun.
