December shooting

#1 Post by shugie »

I know it's generally dark and gloomy in December, and people get their Christmas heads firmly affixed, but it does seem there to be very little shooting going on at Bisley that I can get to. My club is going to Melville on the 16th, the NRA SC is there on the 8th and that's it.

When does NRA shut down for Christmas, nothing on their calendar between 16th Dec and 6th Jan?

We close on the 21st December and re-open on 2nd Jan, ranges open on 3rd Jan.

Just asking, but why are the ranges closed for nearly two weeks over the festive season? Does there have to be someone there for shooters to use the ranges?

We share the danger area with Pirbright Ranges and Landmarc do the range run to check that it is safe for us to use. Landmarc close down for two weeks so we have to as well.

Who or what is Landmarc, forgive me for the daft questions but I'm just trying to understand how it works. Over here if I want to shoot say on Christmas day I just turn up at the range and shoot, same for any other day of the year. Went out this morning in fact and I was the only one there, had two rifle, two pistol and all the shotgun ranges to myself if I wanted to use them. Doesn't require anyone else to be there and doesn't require anyone looking over my shoulder or telling me what I can and can't shoot.

Sorry. Landmarc are the company that runs the MoD ranges. There has to be a range run to check that the fences are intact and no signs of people in the danger area. Without that check they wont OK the danger area, and hence the ranges, for use.

You have to remember that we are in, what is now, a built up area and people do daft things, even when all the signs tell them not too!!

If it was a private range or a no danger area range then we wouldn't have that constriction however......

Thankfully my clay club have just decided to put on a New Year shoot on the 30th, so life will not be too bang free over Christmas.
