No. Report back won't you? I might be off there next year and it would be nice to know your impressions being a neophyte too. Hope all goes to plan! :)

EDIT: No intention of shooting competitions down at Bisley as I said in my intro thread. But it appears the more you do to support your application the better so.......

Hi

I have done about a dozen (as the assessor). It usually takes about 3 hours, depending slightly on how many clients there are.

The "assessment" element is very small. We want to be sure that you understand the safety implications of everything you might do by walking in, presenting your membership card and certificate of safety and competence and on the basis of those hiring guns, buying ammo and renting range space as an individual.

So, we take a walk around the site in which the assessor explains the ways in which Bisley is complex and unique and how you have to behave as a result. In amongst that you will be required to demonstrate that you can set the sights appropriately on all the firearms you are safety-certified for, and follow the appropriate range drills including in particular the misfire and unload drills for all those firearms. You will be expected to be aware of the Bisley Range Safety Regulations (see page 41 onwards of the NRA Handbook, downloadable at http://www.nra.org.uk/common/files/bibl ... e_main.pdf ) and in particular paragraph 6 starting at page 49. If you know in ordinary terms what the Regulations say and where to look for them , that will mostly do, but you should have the essence of para 6 ingrained in your behaviour on the range.

You will fire about 20 shots in total from 3 or 4 firearms. If you have your own guns and / or ammo feel free to bring them and demonstrate your competence with them. Otherwise, you will be handed an NRA firearm and ammunition and expected to demonstrate competence -which can be as simple as saying "How do I work this?" (admission of ignorance is not a fail - pretending competence is!), though you will be expected to demonstrate that you understand in general what the safety processes for any firearm are, and what you should do to ensure that the first shot hits the target.

If you want more advice in advance do ask. The assessors want you to pass first time without trouble, and will be happy to explain anything if you front up that you are unsure, but I'm happy to talk online or offline (NRA ext 154) ahead of your assessment.

Sorry to contradict you Ian but experienced shooters joining the NRA by the Membership Assessment option have to use NRA firearms. 4 in total; open and scoped 7.62 in prone position, usually at 100yards and .22rimfire plus pistol calibre carbine standing, usually at 25yards. A bench can be used if standing or lying down is a problem.
