If you guys ever want to go down that route, let me know and I will photograph my Gas plug from all angles and give you the measurements.

I really can't see any issues with doing that, it's purely cosmetic after all.

Suffolk really took great care in preserving as much as possible..my Gas block is clear, but "the gas bleed route" has had a fine rod (about 3mm width) welded vertically down through it to very effectively de-activate it and the back of the plug has been very carefully machined away to render it useless.

Mine is an original block however with the L1A1 "960" NATO stock number prefix (see pic), is the Anglo unit original or a mock up guys?

Cheers, John.
Thanks John, There is no rod (beneath the handguards) on the anglo models, for me that was a godsend as the Brit handguards I got I had to have sanded inside a bit to fit. With that rod it would me sanding all the way along if that maskes sense ?

Thanks for the offer Huntervixen, wouldn't mind taking you up on the offer of photos and dimensions. Suffolk did a really good job in preserving the looks of yours.

The Anglo Custom rifles use original Receivers and the gas block also has the 960 stock numbers with crows foot. So I guess that the internal gas hole on that has been permanently plugged in some way.

The plug at the rear of the block is welded to what I guess is a spigot coming through the block from the dummy front plug. I've knocked up a bit of stainless steel tube sprayed with black enamel to fill the gap left by the absence of a gas tube. The tube is purely cosmetic, thin walled so couldn't possibly take any pressure even if I wanted it to, and is simply resting on the crown of the domed weld on the back plug, and turned down to the internal diameter of the collar at the receiver end. I guess that it may also provide a bit of extra support lost with the removal of the real gas tube.

It also looks better with the hand guard on as I found the void above the barrel annoyingly noticeable (I'm such a Nerd) through the side vents.

Incidentally, I have a spare brand new Butt removal tool (For the L1A1 before someone comments) for sale. p.m. if interested.

Cheers

Hi Paul and Dirtbag,

I did buy a butt removing tool from you Paul a while ago, makes life much easier and have gone down a similar route, re Gas tube.

Inspired by the pic you sent me of your "Gas tube but not really" fitted to your L1.

I took measurements with a micrometer and popped down to my local fabricators to see what they had......By pure luck they had the exact width solid drawn bar in stock!

(Not bothered about the extra weight because I won't be humping the L1 across the Falklands or around Belfast)!

It was left over from a project, so I bought 2 meters of it for a cracking price.

I haven't fitted a length yet as I just haven't had time, but I will get round to it soon.

Is the carry handle nut on both your rifles ridiculously tight, I broke my combination tool trying to undo it and had to use a hammer and punch to undo the bloody thing!

Anyway I am away until next weekend and will send you both pics and measurements of the Plug guys...

P.s Dirtbag, do you want some "Not gas tube" let me know mate.

Cheers, John.

Damn Huntervixen, was it you I was meant to send some tube to, if it was I still have some of my stainless 'not a gas tube' material which would be a lighter solution than solid bar? It just needs a couple of thou' off the Diameter at the carrying handle nut end, tailoring to your gun length-wise then painting. You do have to move the front site forward to get the tube in place but I reckon it's worth it.

Sorry I didn't get round to it before, sort of had a busy year.

The carry handle nut on mine didn't present any problems.

Cheers

Yep, dependent on condition and price I'm definately interested John.

With the wood stock, I presume that there were different lengths like the No4 etc? I've had to put the second largest butt insert on mine to get a comfortable shooting position but I've heard that wooden L Stocks are rarer than Rocking Horse Droppings. Have you ever come across them?

Cheers

Hi Paul,

No problem mate, I know what it's like to be busy, I run 2 businesses and am restoring an old house...don't know if I'm coming or going most days!

If you have some left I would be very grateful mate.

Regarding the wood, I don't know much about the set yet, I know it's complete and British, you are quite right regarding stock length, just like the good old Lee Enfield days, Short, Medium and Long.

I might have a long Butt here somewhere, not sure, I'll have a look when I get back buddy.

I will be offline until next weekend, off on a "stress break"

Speak then, cheers, john.

Back now guys,

I will be taking the L1 out on it's maiden shoot next Wednesday so I will photograph the gas plug then, and post the pics and dimensions.

Cheers all, John.

Very envious, always fancied an SLR, never seem to have the spare cash whenever one comes up!
