New toy

#1 Post by majordisorder »

Well after a monumental wait (who would have thought getting a barrel would be such a nightmare) I've taken delivery of my .45 ACP Remington 700. I spent a couple of hours this afternoon with Mik at Dolphin setting it up and running a few rounds through it.

It will be used indoors @ 25m and outdoors @ 100m on my club ranges so we tested two loads I'd put together, one based on Unique and the other AA#7. Given these were the first rounds I've ever loaded I don't think they were too bad. Managed to get 5 rounds through the same hole with 5.2g of Unique and a 230g cast bullet averaging around 780fps. The 100m outdoor load I'd put together was 17g of AA#7 with some Speer 185g bullets, these screamed out at very nearly 1800fps with no pressure signs, so my goal of 2000fps might be achievable

Just one rushed photo tonight to satisfy you lot! Can't wait for tomorrow night to try it at the club. Huge thanks to Mik @ Dolphin for a cracking gun..... Now, what's the next one going to be :good:

Mik did try to convince me to change and shoot the "proper way round", but I told him I was special

Very nice! Are you using a detachable mag system?
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Lovely looking - I have to say that a 10mm would have been my choice in a carbine but that's not to criticise yours in any way.
I may have some 45ACP brass knocking around i'd give you.

Wow! That's seriously impressive clapclap well done.

I'm almost regretting that I couldn't get my 45ACP project off the ground but that's life. I'm more than happy with my 45-70 rifle, however...

It does have a adapter system which takes 10 shot 1911 magazines. The mag well is to AICS spec and Mik machined some very nice bling to fit in there.

I will be using it single shot though as there is an issue with ejecting the spent cases. The problem is that the ACP brass is too short to reliably eject. The design of the Remington ejector system relies on the brass being longer and still being captured inside the chamber when the bolt is pulled past the ejection port. With ACP it's not long enough and it pings off the bolt face before its past or level with the port.

What it does mean though is I now don't have to go scrabbling around on the floor looking for spent cases. From the limited shooting I did yesterday it's got the potential to be a superbly accurate single shot rifle and I'm very, very happy with it.
