Do you mean the opening of the bolt face? As this is invariably part of a re-barrel job the rifle will have to be submitted for proof at the end where the whole thing is checked over.

More as in changing the 'calibre' of pressure bearing parts/firearms licensing? Is the whole gun taken in as its original calibre and then signed back over as a 'new' gun of a different calibre on the persons FAC or are the parts done individually etc

I typically machine bolt faces destined to be donor actions for semi-custom builds, however a customer can also ask that his .223 T3 be re-barrelled in say 6,5x47Lapua so he would transfer the gun to his RFD, apply for a 1:1 if necessary. The bolt face is then opened, a new barrel fitted, possibly a new stock, Cerakote and so for a semi-custom build. The rifle is then submitted for proof and when finished is signed onto the FAC as a new acquisition albeit with the same serial as before.
