Steyr SSG trigger guards

#1 Post by M41B »

Not sure if anyone would be interested but I think I may have found a solution to the often mentioned problem with the Steyr SSG trigger guard housing. As you know the original is made of what looks like a cheap and nasty plastic which as I found to my cost (twice!!!) dissolves when certain solvents are put on it and it snaps when you do the screws up too tight. A friend of mine said that he could make one for me out of aluminium if I leant him one to replicate. Anyway, 5 weeks later he showed me the first sample. It needed a few very minor modifications, one of which was to also remake the trigger cover plate which fits inside (I was going to use the original plastic one), the other was to round off two small corners. The second one fitted perfectly. It didn't require any inletting on the stock and I can use both the 5 and 10 round mags with it meaning that I don't have to buy replacement mags as some of the other conversions need. He finished it in Cerakote with a colour that was matched to the original metalwork.

I've tried and failed to put some pictures on but hopefully this will be sorted soon.

Regards.

Mat

I would very much like to see a picture. If you email them to me I will post them for you if you like. This sounds very interesting. I own a SSG and I noticed last time out mine has cracked.

Mine was in pristine condition and actually cracked when I unscrewed the rear screw, to say I was unimpressed is an understatement!

Hi Mat, the only major criticism of this firearm and its successors is the bottom metal and the magazines, your buddy has done you a real service. Why they made a 'service' firearm with such flawed components beats me!? I love mine the action of the bolt is amongst the best I have felt, it is also fitted with the mated Kahles ZF95 with ballistic turrets, once I matched my ammunition to this calibrating for range changes is so easy. I guess the next question would be would be make up some more? A chap in Austria, Styria Arms, makes these to use with AI mags, his retail for about €450 if I recall correctly but I gather he is not the easiest person to deal with or get hold of. Have a word with your friend, now he has done the 'hard' work of prototyping it might be worthwhile for him financially especially if he could make one to accept a more widely available and less costly magazine option.

I think he is considering it. As you rightly say he has done the hard work already.
