Short Siberia - Bisley

#1 Post by targetman »

I heard on the Grapevine that the 100 yard range on Short Siberia is going to be "off limits" during the week as it will be wholly used by the British Nuclear Police........this seriously effects a number of clubs, my own included, and completely buggers my carefully made plans to reintroduce a whole host of antique sec58 rifles to my FAC for use at short range.

Anybody heard anything ??

This subject was pretty much done to death on here a week or two back.

Yes, we will be letting Short Siberia to the CNC during the week. They are a very important commercial client of the NRA, and we want to maintain the most positive working relationship with them that we can. They will also pay considerably more for the exclusive use of the range than we could hope to recover from members.

In recognition that this would otherwise represent a loss of amenity, we are taking steps to improve the 100 and 200 yard layout on the right hand side of Century. This will include improved access on foot and by vehicle, better drainage, new firing points and other changes to produce a facility that we believe members will find provides all that Short Siberia does and more. Ground works will commence very soon.

Sticking my head above the parapet, I support the move.

Drainage will be a problem however and I suspect thgat wellies will be an essential part of shooting kit.
Gun rhymes with fun.

We are constrained only by the rules of safety and our own imagination.

Apolgies for raising the subject again......I was unaware that the topic had been discussed as I cannot access FBUK at home....only when I "borrow" a computor in somebody's office...as I am doing now whilst waiting for a client to turn up.....

Any idea as to the time scale for the new 100 yard facility.....and what of the mid-week use of that end of Century whilst work is undertaken?...will we be accomodated elsewhere ?

Targetman,

You are correct, regrettably. NRA has sold Short Siberia to nuclear police for their exclusive use Tuesday to Friday, but no one knows anything about it because there has been no need to tell anyone as nothing has changed!! Nuclear police have been using Short Siberia 2 days a week for some time and this is just an extension of that existing agreement. And if the nuclear police want to use the Century 24/7 at some time in the future, there will be no need to tell anyone about it, because it will be the extension of the same existing agreement. It is all part of the NRA caring plan for members and if we don't like it we can sod off and shoot somewhere else.

Some people on this forum claim that the subject has been done to death, which is strange because the vast majority of Short Siberia shooters know nothing about it. Perhaps they mean that all shooting on Short Siberia in the week is DONE TO DEATH! and in that case I could not agree more.

Nuclear police have only about 450 shooting personnel and they could all be trained to well above military standard of skill on just one day a week. I am sure you will be pleased to know that you and I are paying for this, because they are funded by the taxpayer and it must be a real paradise for them to be bussed to Bisley from various nuclear sites for a day's shooting jolly, followed by lunch and drinks at The Army TSC.

The displaced shooters should get together and visit George Osborne to put this as a suggestion for his next round of cuts!

The NRA have already said this is an invaluable revenue stream and every penny they can bring in is a good thing right now. They have also announced that the ground works for the 100/200 ranges on Century are about to start to cater for the shooters that want to shoot weekday as well as weekends.

Roll on the AGM and release of accounts as they will probably publish details of the rental revenue and prove once and for all that it made good financial sense.

I cannot see what there is to be worried about.

Indeed, the NRA needs every penny it can get it's hands on.

Shame that those who historically made loads of money out Bisley cannot be forced to pay it back.

Shame on those, who historically, allowed it to happen....

Hopefully, the new managment will never allow the sort of shenanigans that did happen ever happen again.

We, the members, are paying for all this, despite whatever the police are paying, it is only a diversion of tax payers money....our money.

That said.....the lack of communication on this matter is frankly appalling....our club has not been notified of any changes in our weekday range bookings. Will the alternative arrangemnts be in place before before Siberia is closed to us?

I was informed of the plans for Siberia by the range office when i tried to make a booking, all it took to find out was a polite question,a few months of inconvenience midweek seems likely, but surely a longterm revenue stream and improved facilities elsewhere are worth a few changes to our shooting diaries.
Hopefully this is the start of a programme of improvement to benefit all who use bisley.

Cheers phil
