Ethically pure 10 shot groups

#1 Post by Ovenpaa »

I have to admit I am really pleased with this. 10 shots at 50 metres. Shot with a 100+ year old, all original, BSA Model 12 Rim-fire rifle. It is equipped with open sights to aid my 62 year old eyes and complimented by 'borrowed' ammunition (Cheers Nick) and a far from ideal front aperture. To me it just feels like 'proper' shooting and I would struggle to remember when i last had this much fun.

Trust me when I say it took some effort to get this result. I think I will award myself a beer a bit later and yes, I know smaller groups can be shot with ease, I have an Anschutz that will put 10 shots probably through the same hole at 50m with it's 24X scope. It is not the same.

There’s nowt wrong with that at all! There’s lots of pleasure to be gained with this sort of shooting and with these sorts of guns!

I have a first year production Marlin 1892 in .22. Not too dissimilar performance but will always make me smile more than besting it with a modern rifle and modern glass...

That’s why we’re enthusiasts, not just shooters....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

I did say to Rob it has taken a few goes to get it to this point, changes in ammunition, rear aperture, shooting position and light all have an impact. Even changing the rear aperture had a negative impact this afternoon. The real issue is I shoot at LSR 50m targets and they are just too big for my front aperture which being original BSA cannot be changed. The rifle is probably nigh on as accurate at 100 yards simply because I can get a better sight picture. I am thinking about printing over targets with a smaller disk and folding them over the LSR ones to get a decent sight picture, just not sure of the ethics... Having said that, I am up against people running 24X scoped semi autos.

I recently acquired an 1888 Martini Henry MKIV converted to .22lr. I went straight to the range and could not believe how much I enjoyed shooting it.
So much so I am waiting to collect a full bore version, totally hooked.
It's that feeling that brought me back to shooting and I am glad I found it.

The only way to go!. I have a similar model 12 but in 300 Sherwood. Incredibly accurate rifle, but I do use the no8 aperture sight. Tis rifle is a rebuild, havng been re-stocked and probably re-barrelled by AG Parker, whose name is stamped on the receiver.
