Benchtop metal lathe wanted

#1 Post by Ovenpaa »

I am after a single phase bench top metal lathe (I have outgrown my Unimat 3) Anything considered as long as it is single phase and in reasonable condition.

I got a very good Myford ml7 with screw cutting gearbox from bede tools http://www.bedetools.com/ give Barry a ring he will send them down on a pallet and you won’t pay daft London prices.
Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a
delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous
mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely
possible to pick up a turd by the clean end

Thank you for the link, I will give him a call and see what he has in stock, it is handy if he can deliver as it saves me driving half way across the country. An ML7 would be perfect for my needs, the only thing is they seem to vary in price from GBP4-500 right up to GBP2500 and more and I do wonder how much of a variance there is in quality. Screw cutting would be handy although I have managed to get away without needing to do it so far.

Do you do any milling? I am thinking about using the lathe for basic milling as well using an angle plate. It would be very basic milling so I do wonder if it is worth looking at for small items.

The Unimat 3 is a lovely little lathe but quite limited size wise and it depends how nice it is ;)

...and here is one being used for a new project ;) They are great little lathes, being Swiss made and quite precise they are great for smaller projects however they have a few weak links, the biggest issue being the standard motor. This one runs off a 24vDC motor from a scooter. they are also limited in what they can handle Hence the centre drill acting as a live centre to stop the work piece hopping out of the chuck

I really must get a new lather very soon as I have so many projects I would like to get kicked off.

The one coming has the ability to cut threads and handle larger jobs so I am looking forward to getting it up and running. First issue is it is 150 miles away so I need to wing my way up to sunny Manchester way soon.

I have a few projects planned and I am open to further suggestions as well.
