At the UK end, if it's on a FAC or SGC and it's not going to the EU, just take it and tell the police it's not coming back. The issue is getting it into the other end.

If it is for a personal sale to someone in the US it might be easier to have the buyer do the paperwork side of things. Their first port of call ought to be their local ATF dept. I've always found American authorities really helpful. They usually know what you need from the UK side too.
Conversely whenever I've contacted British authorities I always seem to get 'some guy in a pub' advice then passed to a different department who are just as useless.

Google search and Internet forums indicate that it can be a complicated and expensive business....

might be worth having a chat with a company that already does it. I know there are a few companies that export sec 5 stuff out of the UK, might be worth talking to someone like C&G, see if they can offer you any advice, or will charge a fee to do it for you?

As far as I know there are three companies importing/exporting in the UK, all people looking to do either will ultimately go through one of them.

How many firearms, and what classes, are involved? There are legal work-arounds that avoid the straight export licence / import licence organised by a professional.

They're all s1. Marlins in fact! And modern Marlins at that.....

It's all via a couple of collectors. The money being offered is simply crazy! Which is corroborated by Gunbroker. I could get some really nice pre-1914 models for the figures quoted.
