Ban on Civilian use of SARTS?

#1 Post by phaedra1106 »

Just got back from todays shoot at Otterbutn ranges.

The Landmarc chap spent over an hour trying to get the SARTS targetry to work, after giving up he range range control to be told that they were disabled as civilian clubs are now no longer allowed to use them as we are not qualified to use them. Strange as we've been shooting them for about the last 2-3 years.

Anyone else had this recently?

It has been like that since they came in at Catterick, Major Pox has never allowed civilians to use them.

Civvies have never been allowed at Altcar, despite some clubs having cadet instructors who are qual'd on them. A space cadet barely out of nappies is trusted more than seasoned shooters.

Thanks all :)

I knew about Catterick, technically we don't operate anything, the Landmarc guys set them up then go off taking the control unit with them, all we do is shoot at them!.

Depends on the range we get, anything from 600 to 1300m.

And yes, just the fig.11 resetting targets.

One of our club members found this in Range Orders,

"Otterburn Range Orders:

“Civilian gun clubs are not to use SARTS unless a TAO is running the system”

p, 3-A-3, 3-B-3, 3-C-3, 3-D-2, 3-F-2, 3-G-3, 3-H-3, 3-I-3, 3-J-3, 3-K-3, 3-L-3, 3-P-2, 3-A-3, 3-B-3, 3-C-3………"

Well pressing a button to turn the system on does take a squaddies full cranial capacity, something us mere civvies couldn't possibly handle(!) FFS.

It seems to be a part of the whole 'get civvies out of shooting' mentality.

MoD were going to ban civvies from all military ranges but then came to a compromise with the NRA (SCC or SSC depending upon where and when you read it) and the hope that it would be too much trouble for us to get, now we can't use the simple targetry so they can charge us extra for a 'qualified' person to operate them and hope we'll go away disappointed. Add that to the need for a full medical report that some forces are insisting upon and the burden of keeping the FAC becomes too much for the faint hearted (or so they hope).
Arming the Country, one gun at a time.

Good deals with Paul101, Charlotte the flyer, majordisorder, Charlie Muggins, among others. Thanks everybody.

No civilian ban on Ash ranges using SARTS, we're using them tomorrow.
