From now on this can be known as "The great full-bore member cull of 2018"

Years from now people will be signing up saying in their intro "I used to be a member but..."

I have to say that I’m a member of many other forums, probably in excess of 100 and this is the only one that’s interpreting the rules in this way. Not a single one of the other forums has even contacted me.

An IP address is now deemed personal data hence having to ask for user permission.

From when we started the forum back in 2010 I have made accounts with more than 6 months inactivity inactive, then a few months later if I had heard nothing deleted them.

Please be aware that we will at any time delete your account if requested.

At my HO club so far we have one member who has refused to agree to this.
He will lose his membership and everything that entails.
There isn't anything new - details wise - that will have changed.

Within the DPA and GDPR there is an allowance for lawful business interest (which include charities, non-profits etc), and the holding of member personal information on the forum would be viewed as such. Therefore, as long as a forum has a suitable privacy policy in place, there isn't a need for explicit consent.

However, it is recommended that as good practice you do obtain consent.....

Unfortunately, trying to get a straight answer from anyone, including the ICO, has been a nightmare. I can't wait for the 25th to have come and gone!
