When I was out in Kandahar the A-10's were based there. They'd taxi out to a special arming area surrounded by Hesco and concrete T walls where the safety pins would be removed, then its straight out onto the runway and off with the gun pointing in a safe direction the whole time. When they came back if they'd used the gun but still had rounds left they'd ask permission to empty them onto Tarnak ranges which was a couple of miles away. That'd wake us up in the morning!
When they landed they'd repeat the same procedure as at take of to make sure the gun was safe and all the pins were in etc before they went off to their parking area.
